Game 70: Knicks at Celtics preview

Kevin Garnett and Courtney Lee are out Tuesday night as the Celtics take on the New York Knicks at TD Garden. Lee just went through warmups but said he wasn’t playing as he walked off the court. The shooting guard looked fine putting up jump shots, but he had trouble trailing an assistant off of screens before the game. The Celtics are already playing without Rajon Rondo, Jared Sullinger, and Leandro Barbosa.

This is the third meeting between the Knicks and Celtics this season and the teams are going in opposite directions. The Celtics have lost four straight while the Knicks have won four in a row. The Knicks are half a game behind Indiana for the second seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Celtics are in seventh place. The chance of these two teams meeting in the first round of the playoffs remains very real.

Story lines:
Celtics’ attrition: You can make too much of injuries, but in the case of the Celtics they’re starting to add up. The Celtics are now playing without a point guard or a center. Sullinger, who was so key in Boston’s 102-96 win over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 7, is another big loss. It’s unsurprising that the Celtics have failed to keep up their winning ways after the loss of Rondo.

Fireworks: Without Garnett, the emotional aspect of this game might be muted a bit. Can the Celtics get up for the Knicks tonight?

Home record: Boston is 24-10 at home this season, 12-23 on the road. They’re lucky to be playing in the confines of TD Garden tonight. Any playoff series in which the Celtics must play four road games, however, could be trouble.
