Ainge says he talked to Rondo about a contract extension

During his weekly appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher and Rich” program Thursday, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said he has discussed a contract extension with point guard Rajon Rondo but was unable to get one done.

Rondo, who just recently returned to action after missing almost a year with a knee injury, is under contract through next season. He signed a five-year extension in 2009 for $55 million and is due to make $12.9 million in 2014-15.

“We did talk to Rondo about extending him,” Ainge said on the radio show, “but that’s all part of the negotiation that will happen again this summer and most likely the summer after.

“In the collective bargaining agreement, there are limits on what can and can’t be done. Really, it’s not that Rondo doesn’t want to accept an extension, as much as it’s just not financially smart for him to accept it right now. We didn’t think he would, but we did try.

“I think that Rondo will demand quite a bit in the open market. The competition for Rondo in free agency will be very high.”

When he made his long-awaited return to the court against the Lakers last Friday, Rondo also was introduced as the Celtics’ new captain.
