There’s a $500,000 Basketball Game at BU on Saturday

A half-million dollars is on the line Saturday in the final game of a winner-take-all, single-elimination, 5-on-5 basketball tournament.

The Basketball Tournament was founded by Boston resident Jonathan Mugar. The only requirements for participation were that players were 18-years-old and legal US citizens. Professionals, as well as amateurs who never played basketball past 8th grade, could enter. As such, one very bad team got one of the coveted 32 bids in the tournament and didn’t last long.

The tournament’s mission statement is “to be the most democratic, highest stakes basketball tournament in the world.” One hundred teams applied, with the qualifying 32 teams battling it out in Philadelphia to get down to the final two.

The talent in this tournament is legit. The final two teams are Notre Dame Fighting Alumni and Team Barstool. The Fighting Alumni feature Boston native Torin Francis and some of the best Notre Dame basketball players over the past several years. Team Barstool features Duke’s Dahntay Jones, UConn’s Josh Boone, Florda’s Matt Walsh, and Seton Hall’s Andre Barrett, all of whom played in the NBA. The winning team takes home the $500,000. The losing team gets nothing.
