The Celtics are backing off their pursuit of free-agent big man Kris Humphries, an NBA source tells the Globe’s Gary Washburn Tuesday.
Humphries made $12 million in 2013. He averaged 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds, and it could have been much more if he weren’t buried on the Celtics bench as part of Tank-a-palooza 2013. Humphries averaged 19.9 minutes per game.
It’ll be a shame if Humphries walks, because he’s a solid veteran big man who can help a good team. He also proved himself to be far removed from his reality star days; rather than obnoxious, his locker room honesty came off as refreshing. It also makes sense for the C’s to back off, given that Boston has Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk to give big minutes to at the power forward position.
Someone’s going to sign Humphries, and while it may not be for $12 million, don’t be surprised if it’s close to $10 million.
