For weeks now, it’s been apparent that it was simply a matter of when, not if, the Minnesota Timberwolves would deal away Kevin Love instead of letting him walk away for nothing in free agency next summer.
Today, a new article emerged indicating that a deal may be coming by the end of the month. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the team anticipates moving Love later this month, around the same time as Cavs rookie Andrew Wiggins is eligible to be traded.
The Timberwolves now say that they expect to trade disgruntled all-star Kevin Love and that a deal is expected Aug. 23 or Aug. 24. “I’m saying it’s most likely because Kevin has made it pretty clear that that’s what he wants to do,” Wolves owner Glen Taylor told the Pioneer Press. Cleveland remains the strong bet for Love to join LeBron James. But the Wolves continue to listen to offers from Chicago and Golden State, with Philadelphia expected to be part of a three-team deal.
Taylor’s admission is the first time the owner has openly said that Love would likely be moved. In an appearance on NBA TV last month, Taylor stated, “My preference is that Kevin will come to [training] camp — and I’m sure he will — and play with the team.”
Love already pulled out of the FIBA World Championship last month, to avoid the risk of potential injury before Minnesota dealt him away.
Another sign that a Love-to-Cleveland deal may be on the horizon is a development in the online NBA Store. A visit to the jersey page of Wiggins shows that the uniform has been discontinued. NBC’s Pro Basketball Talk did some additional research on the matter:
It’s noteworthy because there are plenty of jerseys available for other recently-drafted players, including Dante Exum, Julius Randle, and even the injured Joel Embiid. And, when you search for Wiggins on the store site, you are brought to a page that only shows customizable Cavaliers gear, with one t-shirt that shows Wiggins by name and number — though it’s likely that those similarly may never ship.
Both Cleveland and Minnesota can’t acknowledge any trade is official until later this month (if Wiggins is involved) but it appears the Love waiting game will be coming to a merciful end later this month.
