In a column imploring the NBA to “Leave Drake Alone,” Globe and Mail columnist Cathal Kelly describes the $25,000 fine levied by the NBA on the Toronto Raptors a farce. The Raptors were fined after rap star Drake gave a shout-out to Kevin Durant at a recent concert. The public props were a no-no in the eyes of the NBA’s tampering policy because Drake holds the official title of Raptors Team Ambassador.
In the column, Kelly also reveals an interesting tidbit: the Raptors could have avoided paying the fine if they dropped Drake’s official title. The team refused. Given the promotional power Drake has, it makes sense that keeping him is worth more than paying the fine.
