Sox add spring foe

The Red Sox announced another spring training opponent today — the Australian squad that will participate in the World Baseball Classic. The Sox and Aussies will play an exhibition game on March 5 at 6:05 p.m. at City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The Aussie squad is managed by Jon Deeble, the Sox’ coordinator of Pacific Rim scouting. Australia took the silver medal in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Tickets for the game go on sale Friday at 9 a.m., and all will be half-price. They are available online at www.redsox.com or by calling (617) 482-4SOX.

The inaugural World Baseball Classic, which includes teams from 16 countries, will be contested March 3-20 at several sites. Opening round games will be played in Japan, Puerto Rico, Florida and Arizona between March 3 and March 10. Second-round contests will be played in Anaheim and Puerto Rico March 12-16. The semifinals will be played in San Diego March 18 with the championship game to be played there March 20.
