Petagine off roster

The Red Sox today finally announced that they have signed Alex Gonzalez to a one-year contract, as had been previously reported.

To make room for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster, first baseman Roberto Petagine was designated for assignment.

Petagine batted .281 (9-for-32) with a home run and nine RBI in 18 games with the Red Sox last season after opening the year at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he hit .327 with 20 homers and 69 RBIs in 74 games. In parts of six major league seasons with the Astros, Padres, Mets, Reds and Red Sox, the 34-year-old is a .230 (78-for-339) hitter with 11 homers and 52 RBIs in 211 games.
