Pitchers and catchers are due to report today, though “reporting” can be as simple as placing a call to the manager to say, “I’m within state boundaries.” And that, according to GM Theo Epstein, is where he thinks David Wells is. “I think he’s in Florida now,” Epstein said minutes ago during his initial meeting with the media. “I think he’ll be here for his physical tomorrow.” Wells’s agent, Gregg Clifton has been consistent in saying that Wells will report. He was the most interesting Day 1 interview last year, and he figures to retain that post tomorrow.
Curt Schilling, who has done all of his speaking thus far with his T-shirts, has yet to speak to the media. He threw off a mound yesterday and will do so tomorrow for the first time under Terry Francona’s watch. Francona believes he’ll be able to gauge more about Schilling’s health/capabilities early in the spring than he will about Keith Foulke’s.
Today, by the way, is the last day of Foulke’s “vacation,” so expect the erstwhile closer to do his one thorough day of interviewing tomorrow.
Epstein said he expects Manny Ramirez to report on schedule next week but trotted out the “between the player and the club” line when asked about the status of Ramirez’ trade request.
