Pena out 6-8 weeks

Wily Mo Pena is having surgery Thursday morning to remove the hamate bone in his left hand. Sox manager Terry Francona estimated that Pena would miss six to eight weeks.

David Ortiz said he suffered a similar injury to his right hand in 1998. “I broke mine on a swing. Mine snapped. Cost me about two months.”

Oritz has done just fine since.

The bone is at the base of the fourth and fifth metacarpal.

Coco Crisp will be back atop the order against the Blue Jays, a spot in the lineup Francona hope the center fielder can stay. “I don’t know (how long). I hope so, I hope so,” he said.

The Sox are giving Doug Mirabelli a start ahead of Jason Varitek at catcher even though Tim Wakefield isn’t pitching. Mirabelli has good numbers (6 for 15, 3 homers) against Ted Lilly, the Blue Jays starter.

Also back in the lineup is Mark Loretta, after sitting out with a toe injury. Examination showed no break on the big toe on his left foot.
