Clemens set to go

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Checking in from Applebee’s Park, where Roger Clemens makes his comeback start for the Lexington Legends tonight against Lake County Captains (Indians). Nice minor league ballpark here in downtown Lexington featuring the Pepsi Party Deck in right field.

Roger is expected to throw no more than 60 pitches. Oldest son Koby is scheduled to play all nine innings at third base. Roger will not hold a press conference until after the game is over and he’ll do it along with Koby.

Things to consider:

  • The Houston Astros enter tonight’s action 8-1/2 games back in the National League Central. Tough division with the Cardinals and Reds, so it’s certainly not a slam dunk that Clemens makes the Astros a playoff team.
  • The Astros have said that Koby will not be a September call-up and Roger isn’t pushing for it. Therefore, all the talk about Clemens’ decision to re-sign with the Astros because he’ll play with Koby in September never entered into Clemens’ decision.
  • Interesting to note that Clemens will be caught by Jeff Mackor of Salem, N.H., who will be brought up from Single-A Salem. Mackor went to Boston College and was a 15th round pick of the Astros in ’02. Mackor is catching because Justin Towles, who was supposed to catch Clemens, was suspended two games for violating team rules. Suffice to say, Towles is kicking himself today. Not often you can say you caught Roger Clemens …
  • The game has drawn more than 140 media members …The stadium is sold out — over 9,000 fans are expected. Sellout here is 6,017 …
  • Koby, by the way, wears No. 8 and was activated from the disabled list (dislocated pinky) last night. Koby was born Dec. 4, 1986, a couple of months after You KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
