By the numbers

The Red Sox head to Florida with the third-longest winning streak in team history, and the longest in nearly 11 years. A victory tonight would give them their best run since 1948. Here’s a look at the top eight winning streaks in team history:

15 games April 15-May 10, 1946
13 July 18-27, 1948
12 June 16, 2006 –
12 Aug. 3-14, 1995
12 July 15-25, 1988
12 May 29-June 11, 1946
12 July 4-16, 1939
12 July 28-Aug. 8, 1937

More tidbits on the streak, courtesy of the Red Sox pregame notes package:

  • The 12-game run is the longest by any major league club since Houston won 12 in row Aug. 27-Sept. 8, 2004 and longest by an AL club since Tampa Bay’s 12-game streak from June 9-22, 2004.
  • The last major league team to post a winning streak of better than 12 games was Oakland during its epic 20-game run Aug. 13-Sept. 4, 2002.
  • Eight different pitchers have collected wins during Boston’s 12-game run: Josh Beckett (3), Jon Lester (3), Rudy Seanez (1), Kyle Snyder (1), Tim Wakefield (1), Jonathan Papelbon (1), Craig Hansen (1) and Curt Schilling (1)…Papelbon (4) and Mike Timlin (1) each have at least one save.
