I saw Jason Varitek pull into the Sox parking lot at 3:30 after undergoing an MRI, but there is no word yet on his condition. Doug Mirabelli will catch tonight, and Terry Francona looked at Alex Cora and Mike Lowell as possible options in an emergency. The manager said Lowell would get the call if something were to happen to Mirabelli.
The Sox had not yet made a roster move to activate Jason Johnson to make tonight’s start, and if something has to be done with Varitek in terms of the DL, I suspect we wouild hear something just before the game. The left knee Varitek twisted last night has been bothering him for a couple of weeks.
Francona said he had no update on Trot Nixon, who has not been available to the media since getting hurt (biceps strain) Sunday night. The manager met Tim Wakefield in his office this afternoon, and Wakefield has not yet been cleared to throw. He won’t be leaving with the team when it goes to play Tampa Bay this weekend, but could join the club on the road. Matt Clement was planning to throw a buillpen session this afternoon, and Lenny DiNardo has resumed playing catch. Keith Foulke still has a bad back, so no throwing for him, while David Wells, according to Francona, reported no aftershocks from his start last night.
