Papi out

Slow — though beautiful — day here at Fenway. The biggest news is that David Ortiz will get to view this game from the bench, with manager Terry Francona sitting him because he’s been beat up. No injuries, nothing to get concerned about, just the normal wear and tear from the long baseball season. So, with the Tigers and Yankees coming up, Francona elected to have a fresh Papi for the next two series. Manny Ramirez slides over to DH, and Gabe Kapler and Wily Mo Pena join Coco Crisp in the outfield.

Also, a bit of news on the return of Trot Nixon — an absence that’s been helped significantly by the bat of Wily Mo Pena. Francona speculated that Nixon might be close to ready to play (for someone) by the time the Red Sox hit the road for their second and final West Coast swing of the season. That would be a little more than a week from now, on August 22. It would almost certainly be a minor-league rehab assignment.

Doug Mirabelli takes the catching duties today, with Javy Lopez on schedule to catch tomorrow. Francona wanted Mirabelli to catch Jon Lester, and with yesterday’s game being a day game, that afforded him the opportunity to set up his catching rotation the way he wanted.

No update on Keith Foulke’s activation, but Francona did say that the reliever’s back did improve a little. That will determine his readiness to come off the disabled list.
