Drew deal still not official

It has attracted little notice since the conference call announcing J.D. Drew had finally come to terms with the Sox, but he’s still not officially on the team’s 40-man roster.

He will be placed on the roster when his contract is officially approved by Major League Baseball, according to a Sox official. That customarily takes just a few days, but the Sox official cited the case of Carlos Lee, the free-agent outfielder whose deal was announced with Houston last November, but wasn’t OK’d until Jan. 26.

Drew’s deal should be approved within a few days, the official said. But while it may be just a formality, there’s some relevance here: The Sox will have to take someone off the 40-man roster to make room for Drew.

Mike Andrews (not the former Sox second baseman), who runs the highly useful SoxProspects.com website, raised the question with me this week.
