Lester: 6 H 3 R

Jon Lester was knocked around a bit in a minor league game this afternoon. Pitching against Rochester, the Twins’ Triple-A team, Lester did not finish either the second or third innings because of pitch count restrictions. He came out after three times out to the mound, and wound up throwing 42 pitches, and gave up six hits and three runs, while walking one and striking out one.

Meanwhile in Bradenton, Daisuke Matsuzaka hit the first batter he faced, Chris Duffy, who was involved in a bit of a verbal dust up with Curt Schilling last spring after taking one off the noggin from Schill, who admonished him to do a better job of getting out of the way. Duffy wound up coming around on two infield hits and a base hit by Adam LaRoche that J.D. Drew fielded on the short hop in right.

Matsuzaka proceeded to set down the next 11 Pirates in order, whiffing six, before issuing a walk with one out in the fifth.

Sox lead, 4-1, end of five, with J.D. Drew knocking in three and Manny the other.
