The once and future closer

Tim Wakefield, who pitched six innings today, said he hadn’t heard from manager Terry Francona that Jonathan Papelbon would be closing, but said if it’s true, “it makes us a better team.”

“He was lights out last year. I’d love to have him back as closer. It makes us a better team.”

Papelbon is in his third inning of work. He gave up a run on a couple of singles in the seventh, struck out two in a 1-2-3 eighth, and is now in the bottom of the ninth inning with the potential winning run on second after a walk and sacrifice.

4-4. Wily Mo and Kevin Youkilis both hit long home runs for the Sox. Chase Utley took Wakefield deep.
