FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox sent reliever Craig Hansen to Pawtucket this morning. Hansen and fellow pitcher Bryan Corey were optioned to the minors after meeting with Sox manager, Terry Francona.
Hansen was 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA this spring and was roughed up for five runs in Sarasota Monday. A 2005 draft pick out of St. Johns he has struggled with the parent club and will not be used as a closer in Pawtucket.
”He was rushed,” admitted Francona. ”Now we want him in a routine where he can separate himself from other pitchers. By his own admission he had an uneven spring. We still firmly believe this kid has a bright future and I think he’s prepared to go do that.”
Corey was 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings of spring training.
Manny Ramirez (sore throat) is taking batting practice but will not play against the Pirates today. He’ll play tomorrow night against the Twins in the winner-take-all Mayor’s Cup finale. Curt Schilling and Johan Santana will start the big game.
Today the Sox have Wily Mo Pena is in left field and Doug Mirabelli behind the plate to catch Tim Wakefield. Tony Armas Jr. is pitching or the Pirates.
In other news, Alex Ochoa has spoken with his agent, Scott Boras, and will accept a position with the Red Sox triple-A club at Pawtucket … Mike Timlin is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today. The plan to speak with Jon Lester later today to map out a program. Righthanded pitcher Kyle Snyder has been told that he’s on the 25 man team.
