Oops! The Red Sox ball attendant stationed down the left field line in the top of the fifth may have kept Curt Schilling from giving up another run. With Jason Kendall, who singled on first, Mark Ellis laced a two-out double down the left field line. The overeager attendant knocked the ball down with his glove, picked it up and gave it to a fan. After a confab, the umpires decided not to award home plate to Kendall.
Eric Chavez was called out on strikes on a check swing, Schilling’s seventh K of the evening, a season-high, on the ensuing at-bat. Chavez flipped his helmet and bat in exasperation, a common emotion when dealing with home plate umpire Charlie Reliford tonight. A’s manager Bob Geren was ejected by Reliford.
