Sox sign first European player

Some offday news to report courtesy of the Red Sox media relations department:

The Red Sox have signed their first amateur free agent from Europe under the team’s current ownership group, agreeing to terms on a 2008 contract with righthanded pitcher Jennel Hudson from Cologne, Germany.

The 6’5”, 17-year-old Hudson pitches for the Cologne Cardinals and is currently participating in the Major League Baseball European Academy in Tirrenia, Italy, where former Red Sox pitcher Bruce Hurst is among the instructors. He was scouted and signed at the MLB Academy by Red Sox vice president of international scouting Craig Shipley and Pacific Rim scouting coordinator Jon Deeble. Hudson is expected to attend Boston’s Florida Instructional League Program this fall.
