Torre demotes Mussina

NEW YORK – Joe Torre announced after the game that Mike Mussina has been demoted to the bullpen, where he’ll try to work out his recent difficulties.

The Yankees will recall former USC righthander Ian Kennedy (12-3 with a 1.91 ERA at three levels) from Scranton-Wilkes-Barre. He will start Saturday vs. Tampa.

Torre said he discussed the matter with Mussina, and while the veteran right-hander was not pleased with the news, Torre did not commit to Kennedy beyond the one start. Torre said it would depend on how well Kennedy performed.
