Sox set for Mets

PORT ST. Lucie, Fla. — It’s a windy, slightly overcast day here on the east coast of Florida and the Sox arrived at the ballpark just after 10 a.m. For the second straight day, the Sox made the short flight across the state. Theo Epstein is on the trip.

Terry Francona indicated that back in Fort Myers, Josh Beckett is very sore and it’s looking more and more unlikely that the Sox ace will accompany the lads to Japan for the season opener. Neither Francona nor Epstein would commit, but the team leaves a week from tomorrow and Beckett hasn’t pitched to major league batters this spring.

I stopped by Pedro Martinez’ locker and he was in a good mood. Says he keeps his Sox championship ring in New York, but never wears it. Said he watched the Sox win the World Series on television last year. Loves Johan Santana. Says the kid is even better than he thought. ‘‘Reminds me of a young me, only lefthanded,’’ said Pedro.

Theo spoke at some length about the non-trade with the Twins last winter and admitted there were two different deals on the table.

The Mets are allowing the DH in this game. Kevin Cash gets the nod from Terry Francona.
