Drew out, lower back tightness

TOKYO — J.D. Drew was just scratched with lower back tightness.

Though Drew was supposed to be in the lineup, batting sixth, Brandon Moss was announced in his place during player introductions just now.

That must have been late-breaking news, as Moss was also introduced as a member of the reserves. He trotted out to where the players were lined up on the first-base line, then ran back into the dugout. Moments later Moss was announced after Mike Lowell in the lineup.

We then got word of the scratch. Drew had seemed to like the Tokyo Dome, with two home runs (one three-run shot, one grand slam) in the two exhibition games. He didn’t mention any problems when I spoke with him on Sunday after the game against the Yomiuri Giants. In fact, he was in good spirits, walking out carrying a novel by Johnny Cash that he started reading recently.

We’ll get you more updates as they come.
