TORONTO – The Red Sox put up a fight in the ninth against Jays’ closer Jeremy Accardo, but were swept by the Blue Jays after a 7-4 loss here before 30,114 at Rogers Centre.
The Sox had Jason Varitek and Mike Lowell at the corners with one out in the ninth.
Jacoby Ellsbury, who homered earlier in the game, had stroked a ball down the left field line that came within an inch of hitting the chalk line that might have scored one or even two runs. But on the next pitch Accardo struck him out. With two outs, Julio Lugo, 0-for-4 with three errors, ended the proceedings with a fly to center as Accardo preserved the 7-4 win for Roy Halladay.
