With a no-hitter by Jon Lester Monday night and an excellent pitching performance by Justin Masterson last night, the wait continues for Manny Ramirez’ 500th home run. Stuck at 498, he had some interesting things to say on the topic to Maureen Mullen in Tuesday’s Lynn Item (though the comments were made over the weekend):
“There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you about the 500 home runs,” Ramirez said. “I don’t want to hit 500 right now. I want to wait a little while. No one is talking about it. No one’s excited about it. I want to wait until everyone’s excited about it.”
Mullen asked him if he was excited at the prospect of reaching the milestone.
“Nah. Five hundred? No, I’ll be excited for 600.”
Ramirez reiterated, “No, I don’t want to do it. I’m going to do it on the West coast.”
Mullen pointed out to Ramirez that none of the sluggers who had reached the 500 homer milestone before him had done so at Fenway Park.
“That’s OK,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “I’m going to wait.”
