PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Good evening all. Welcome to McCoy Stadium and Game 2 of the David Ortiz rehab stint.
There are a lot of empty seats in the stadium, but the PawSox announced tonight’s game and the two weekend tilts with the Toledo Mud Hens are sold out.
You think it has anything to do with David Ortiz?
Ortiz spoke with the media after he took batting practice. Reporters tried to get Papi to comment on the current situation with Manny Ramirez. Ortiz, however, took the high road.
Ortiz went 1 for 3 last night and hit a line drive home run to right field in the fourth inning.
Ortiz, after last night’s 15-6 win, said he is sticking to the seven-game rehab plan no matter what.
He reiterated that statement today when he spoke to the media.
“I’m not rushing,” he said. “I’m getting old.”
While we wait for the starting lineups, here are a few nuggets on Ortiz:
- This is his first stint in the minor leagues since July 2001 when he was rehabbing from a right wrist injury with the Double-A affiliate for the Minnesota Twins (New Britain).
- Ortiz has been on the injured list since June 3 with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. He suffered the injury May 31 against Baltimore.
- His home run last night was his first in the minors since 1999 when he hit 30 for the Minnesota Twins’ Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City.
- Old friend Anastacio Martinez is on the hill tonight for Toledo. Remember him? He has spent the majority of his career in the Red Sox organization (1998-2005). Martinez made his major league debut with the Red Sox May 22, 2004 against Toronto. He appeared in a total of 11 games that season for the Sox. Martinez and Ortiz, thus, were teammates for a short time that season. We’ll see if Ortiz is familiar with his stuff.
