Strange play

PORTLAND, Maine – Ortiz batted for the second time leading off the bottom of the fourth. Connecticut leads, 9-1, with Portland starter Kris Johnson having been chased in the top of the inning, which took 25 minutes to complete.

Ortiz fell behind 1-2 after taking a check-swing strike, then reached on an infield error on one of the weirder plays seen here recently.

Ortiz’s chopper down the first base line was booted by Defenders first baseman Adam Witter, caromed directly to second baseman Dave Maroul, whose lob to Broshuis covering arrived in plenty of time . . . but was dropped.

More to come.
