Red Sox new left fielder Jason Bay had walked in the bottom of the second inning and scored a run for Boston in his first at-bat to give his team a 1-0 lead. He reached again in the bottom of the fourth in his second trip to the plate when he was hit by a Justin Duchscherer pitch to lead off the inning. Then, with one out, he advanced to third on Jed Lowrie’s single. But Kevin Cash ended the threat when he hit into a double play and the game moved into the top of the fifth inning with Boston still up, 1-0.
