On target at Fenway

Just arrived at the ballpark for tonight’s 7:05 start. Pretty quiet so far, except for target practice in the outfield.

Two Red Sox players — hard to identify from this distance* — are standing on the edge of the right field grass, next to Pesky’s Pole, shooting arrows into a target about 75 feet away. Neither has missed the target through one round of shots.

Of course, the Red Sox offense has been similarly dead-on lately, nailing Texas pitching for 37 runs in the last three games. They’ve got a steeper challenge tonight, facing Roy Halladay (13-9, 2.72), who has struggled against the Sox in the past but was nearly lights-out (8-2/3 innings, 1 run allowed) in his last outing at Fenway.

Tonight we’ll also see the Red Sox debut of Paul Byrd, acquired from Cleveland this week. He’s been hot since the All-Star break (4-0, 1.24). Will be be able to keep it going?

Back with notes from the clubhouse, lineups and more in a bit.

*Update: A pool of reporters in the Fenway press box has determined that Mike Timlin and Daisuke Matsuzaka are the archers.
