A few things….

BALTIMORE – Josh Beckett will start throwing on Friday in Toronto to prepare for his Tuesday start in New York.

Terry Francona reiterated that the tingling and numbness in two of Beckett’s fingers on his right hand has subsided and that the Sox medical people are convinced Beckett did indeed sleep on his shoulder the wrong way last Saturday night before his start on Sunday.

Francona said that Beckett has been asking if he could throw sooner than Friday, which is a good sign.

Julio Lugo said he felt something pull in his left quad while sprinting in the outfield this afternoon and feels he might have suffered a setback from his comeback. Lugo said he was scheduled to start a rehab assignment on Monday in Triple A, but said, “I shut it down today and I’ll see how it feels tomorrow. I felt I was getting really close and now this.”…

Terry Francona said he phoned Orioles’ closer George Sherrill today to talk to him about going on the DL. Sherrill, you’ll remember, had to pitch 2-1/3 innings in the All-Star game and now he’s on the DL with shoulder inflammation. Nobody, including Sherrill, has pointed fingers at Francona, who was running out of pitchers at the All-Star game and needed Sherrill to pitch longer than he had hoped. Francona told him at the time that he’d pitch as long as he wanted. Francona said Sherrill threw only 24 or 25 pitches. Francona said after the All-Star game he talked to president Andy MacPhail, who seemed to understand the situation.
