The Padres are in trade discussions with only one team regarding pitcher Jake Peavy, and he will not accept a trade to the American League, Padres general manager Kevin Towers told a large pack of reporters. The Red Sox at one point were rumored to be a possible trading partner, but that’s out the window.
(That one team is the Chicago Cubs. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was careful not name Peavy by name to avoid any possible tampering. But when asked if he and Towers might just talk about a certain player this week, Hendry replied, coyly, “I’m sure we won’t get to Thursday without having a chat. How about that?”)
On a league-wide note, Hendry said the horrendous economic climate has not given these meetings a different feel than past years.
“I haven’t noticed, because the people I’ve been talking to about trades, that hasn’t come up,” Hendry said. “To me, that just hasn’t been a discussion in the few clubs that we’ve met with on trades.”
We’re still waiting for Scott Boras to hold court. We will keep you posted.
