TAMPA, Fla. — Alex Rodriguez will be on stage at 1:30 p.m. at the same press tent where fellow Yankee Andy Pettitte gave a 55-minute press conference last year at this time.
Both press conferences concerned the use of banned substances — Pettitte for use of HGH and Rodriguez for testing positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003 when the testing was intended to be confidential.
More than 200 reporters from news outlets around the world are here. The Yankees have set aside about 15 “support” chairs for teammates, employees, and advisers of Rodriguez. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Pettitte, general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi are expected to be on hand.
The Yankees are currently in the late stages of a workout at George Steinbrenner Field, where Jeter, Posada, Hideki Matsui and other positional players are hitting. Rodriguez is not one of the players working out. Full workouts begin tomorrow.
