FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox will hold their 16th annual Children’s Hospital Celebrity Golf Classic Friday at The Forest Country Club in Fort Myers.

The annual event raises awareness and funds for The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the only children’s hospital between Tampa and Miami. All funds raised will be matched by a Lee Memorial Health System Foundation philanthropist and will be directed toward an eight-bed expansion of The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona noted the Sox will hold an abbreviated practice Friday in order to leave the player development complex by 11:30 a.m. and be on the tees for the 1 p.m. start.
“It’s a good cause and we have like 30-something guys going this year,” said Francona, who will join players, front office staff, and legends like Jim Rice and Luis Tiant.
“It raises a lot of money for charity and it’s something we do with a smile.”
The event is not open to the public.
