A date for Lowell, and more

Mike Lowell will “probably” make his spring training debut as a designated hitter Tuesday, manager Terry Francona said this morning. Lowell is recovering from offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. If all goes well, Lowell will play third base for the first time next Friday in a night game at City of Palms Park against the New York Yankees.

A few other notes from the morning: Pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, a Rule 5 draft selection, had Tommy John surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews and will begin rehab … Brad Penny will throw 35 pitches tomorrow in a bullpen session. .. David Ortiz, who one report stated was having more shoulder trouble, hadn’t contacted the Red Sox and is apparently fine; the report was a bit overheated, it seems. “They all have instructions to call or text if anything that needs to be” shared, Francona said. “As of 20 minutes ago, I was text free.” … Rocco Baldelli has been experiencing some tightness in his groin. “It’s been the last couple days,” Francona said. “It’s not that bad or anything. Just thought it made to stay away until he’s feeling better.”

And the Red Sox lineup against the Rays this afternoon:

4. Brad Wilkerson, RF
5. Jeff Bailey, LF
