Lester: ‘Nothing is final’

After throwing 2 1/3 innings today, Jon Lester was politely evasive concerning the report of his impending contract extension. He did not by any means shoot down the Yahoo! Sports report or give any reason to believe we won’t be hearing something official by tomorrow. Mostly, Lester pleaded ignorance on the deal, which is evidently for five years and $30 million with a team option for $13 million in 2014.

“I have no idea,” said Lester, who allowed four hits and four runs (one earned) today. “I don’t know what the schedule is the next couple of days. I’m sure we’ll know if we’re ready to announce anything, if there’s anything to announce, we’ll do it. I just show up and do what I’m told.”

So has Lester reached an agreement?

“No,” Lester said. “Not that I’m told. Nothing is final. Nothing is written on paper or written in stone. Like I said, I just show up and do what I’m told and go where I’m told to go. That all I worry about.”

Lester, when the deal becomes official, will join Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis as home-grown Red Sox players to sign long-term deals this offseason. Jonathan Papelbon signed a one-year contract earlier this offseason, which he said he preferred to a long-term contract. Lester, though, cherished the notion of stability.

“I think anybody does, no matter what type of person it is, no matter what Pap tells you,” he said. “Anybody prefers that stability and that guaranteed money. Like I said, I’m looking forward to it if we get it done. Nothing’s finalized, and nothing is set in stone.”

Lester said he has not been directly involved in the process this spring. “I haven’t heard a lot,” Lester said. “I just worry about showing up to the park and playing baseball. I don’t worry about the other stuff.

“It would be nice,” Lester said. “But nothing is finalized, so I can’t tell you how it feels. I’d be lying to you if I told you it felt good or bad or whatever. If and when we sign on the dotted line, you can come ask me that same question. I’d be glad to let you know.”
