Drew’s hand, Youkilis’s foot

Kevin Youkilis took batting practice wearing sneakers, sans plastic boot on his left foot, while J.D. Drew did not participate with the Red Sox during their morning workout. Youkilis is hopeful he’ll play in a game Monday, while Drew was unsure of how long it would take him to return from the contusion on his right hand, which was hit by a Donnie Veal pitch yesterday and wrapped up today.

The plan for is to “just to kind of hangout until it feels well enough to start swinging and stuff,” Drew said. “It feels pretty good. Just stiff and sore from the bruise. But fortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s broken or anything. Hopefully I won’t have any issues when I start coming back to swing.”

Drew did not think the pain and weakness in his hand would keep him out too long. He seemed to think it would be a matter of days, and that missing Opening Day is in no way a possibility because of this injury. Manager Terry Francona said, “It’ll be completely day to day on how he feels, how quickly the bruise doesn’t feel bruised.”

“We’ve got time,” Drew said. “I don’t want to pick up a bat and start swinging where we’d continue to irritate it and can’t make strides in the right direction. It’s not going to do me a whole lot of good to try to go out there and hit with a sore hand, anyway. I’ll take it a day at a time, and there will be a day when I finally come in and it feels good enough to go out there and hit, and then I’ll be fine.”

Youkilis was examined this morning by Dr. Peter Asnis, and the diagnosis was positive enough that he could remove the boot he’s worn for three days. Youkilis said he had “good strength in the tendons. It’ll be fine.”

Pain has subsided for now because of the rest Youkilis gave his foot, but the question is whether it will return when he begins to put more strain on his left foot. “I don’t think it will,” he said. To that point, Youkilis will “probably” play Monday, he said.

“If I could play tomorrow, I’d love to,” Youkilis said. “I don’t think they’re going to let me.”

Francona echoed Youkilis’s wish, saying, “he can maybe get a couple at bats on Monday. Again, we’ll see about that. Just since he was in the boot, not feeling too good, we certainly don’t want this to linger.”
