Sox have little interest in Catalanotto

Under different circumstances, Boston might be a perfect destination for Frank Catalanotto. But at the moment, the Red Sox seem far more inclined to open the season with Chris Carter as the replacement for Mark Kotsay.

Released by the Texas Rangers yesterday, Catalanotto and his career .358 on-base percentage are now available for a commitment of nothing more than the minimum salary of $400,000. The soon-to-be 35-year-old Catalanotto can play the outfield and first base, but he is regarded primarily as an offensive player who can work counts and extend the lineup.

Sounds like a perfect fit for the Sox, right?

According to multiple baseball sources, the Sox have not contacted Catalanotto’s agent, Alan Nero, and there are no indications that they plan to do so. Still, Catalanotto could be a nice fit for a team needing offense entering the season, particularly off the bench. His ability to give time at multiple positions might even make him a good fit for the National League, though he has spent his entire career in the American League.
