Jason Varitek has the day off today, a day game after a night game, and cedes to George Kottaras. In the past, Varitek has inisisted on not getting day games off, even though the practice is common for catchers. He may see more days off this year on day games that follow night games.

“When a guy is [36] years-old or something, you don’t necessarily always ask,” manager Terry Francona said. “That’s just kind of common sense. We’ve got a lot of baseball to play this year. Just trying to make a long season work.”

Other than Kottaras, it’s the usual. The Sox will get their first look at Japanese rookie Koji Uehara, who is 2-0 so far with a 7.20 ERA.
