Sox on Manny

The Red Sox were greeted by an extra-large horde of reporters and a slew of video cameras in their clubhouse today, the distraction of Manny Ramirez having made a one-night cameo return. Some thoughts from various players:

DUSTIN PEDROIA
“Playing with him for a couple years, that’s the furthest thing you think of. It’s definitely unfortunate for him. I think for all of us, it’s really not our issue any more. He’s gone to L.A., and it’s unfortunate for him. Obviously, he’s one of the greatest righthanded hitters ever. It’s just tough to look up there as a fan of the game like anybody else and see a superstar go through something like this.”

MIKE LOWELL
“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I don’t feel like our ’07 season was tainted. This is still a 25-man team. I think it still remains to be seen what happened in ’07. I think Manny’s going to be questioned a lot.”

“If people stop trying to beat the system, maybe that might help, that might be a good start. I think it probably proves that our testing – and I know everyone likes to hammer it – is working. It’s not being biased to guys in Double A or Triple A. It’s happened to some of the biggest names of the game. I think in that sense, it’s got to be a good thing.”

JASON BAY
“My reaction was I don’t know him, but I was going to get a lot questions about him.I knew regardless of me not knowing him one bit, I was still going to get asked about it.”

“It’s another mark for baseball. It’s tough that a lot of this stuff goes down. As a baseball player and a baseball fan, it’s another black eye that you’ve got to fall out of a little bit. It’s unfortunate. Hearing that, it’s a huge name. It’s not an everyday occurrence.”

JONATHAN PAPELBON
“I just walked in the clubhouse today and found out about it. I haven’t really thought about it all. We’ve got more things to worry about on our club. Obviously, it’s a news story, blah, blah, blah. There’s so many more things we have to go get ready for. He’s not in our clubhouse anymore, so this is something that we’re not even worried about.”
