In today’s episode of Globe 10.0, the Globe’s Bob Ryan and Chad Finn debate whether the Red Sox should be thinking about trading Brad Penny (5-1, 5.96 ERA) while his value is high. Both Ryan and Finn think the best thing for the Sox to do is deal Penny “before he turns back into a pumpkin,” as Finn puts it. Penny is 3-0 in his last four starts with a 4.38 ERA.
After all, Ryan and Finn argue, the Sox aren’t lacking for replacements. Either Clay Buchholz (who nearly tossed a perfect game yesterday) or Michael Bowden are ready and able, and let’s not forget John Smoltz.
Because they signed him as a free agent this offseason, the soonest the Red Sox can trade Penny is June 15. In any case, Ryan thinks Penny’s days in Boston are numbered.
“Certainly when July 31 comes around he will no longer be a member of the Boston Red Sox,” Ryan says.
