( 3:06, Game Over, 3-1 Red Sox win) Jonathan Papelbon has preserved a 3-1 win for Josh Beckett, who had his ace stuff today. It was Papelbon’s 13th save. The game was marred by a weird seventh inning in which home plate umpire Todd Tichenor, who is a Triple-A umpire and fill-in on major league games, threw out both sets of catchers and both sets of managers. Tichenor threw out Twins’ catcher Mike Redmond, who felt he had tagged out Jeff Bailey trying to score from second base before Bailey touched or didn’t touch home plate on a hand slide. Manager Ron Gardenhire then argued and was ejected as well. In the bottom of the 7th, Jason Varitek, who hit two solo homers, was tossed when he argued a called ball on a 1-2 count that looked like strike three. Terry Francona came out to back up Varitek and was tossed as well. Tichenor has umpired 57 major league games since 2007. He was on a crew replacing Ed Montague, who has received some time off. Another note: Jacoby Ellsbury’s 22-game hitting streak ended.
