John Smoltz’s Fenway debut as a Red Sox?
Not so good.
Smoltz had shut out the A’s over the first three innings, but he had trouble in the fourth.
An RBI single by Nomar Garciaparra, a two-run double off the wall by second baseman Mark Ellis, and an RBI single by Adam Kennedy, all were part of a four-run, five-hit inning. Granted, Kurt Suzuki’s bunt that died and stayed fair didn’t help matters. Smoltz seemed to be catching too much of the plate with his pitches. He had thrown 69 pitches through four innings.
It’s 4-0 A’s.
