Sox rally fizzles
A’s starter Brett Anderson, 21 years old, threw a 97 mile per hour fastball past rookie Aaron Bates to retire the Sox in the fifth.
Anderson had walked Rocco Baldelli and allowed a single to Nick Green.
With runners at first and third, Bates took the count to 3-2 before swinging and missing at a high fastball. The Sox have mustered only two hits against Anderson over the first five innings and the A’s still lead, 4-0.
