Update: Orioles vs. Red Sox

RED SOX WIN (9:45, FINAL, 7-2 RED SOX)
Ramon Ramirez threw the final inning, getting Jones to fly out to right to end the game and secure back-to-back victories for the Red Sox. Wieters led off the inning with a hit and was followed by a strike out by Izturis. Roberts popped out to third. Markakis singled to right to set up Jones, who ended up 0-for-5.
Lester gets his ninth win of the season.

LAROCHE HOMERS (9:32, END 8, 7-2 RED SOX)
LaRoche’s first hit with the Red Sox was a two-run homer that drove in Lowell, who reached on a single to right. LaRoche’s 13th homer of the season was to the opposite field and just landed in the first row of seats above the Green Monster.
Hendrickson got Varitek to fly out but then was replaced by Cla Meredith came in to retire Green and Ellsbury to end the inning.

LESTER ENDS NIGHT (9:26, MID 8, 5-2 RED SOX)
Daniel Bard relieved Lester with one out after Reimold drilled a double off of the Wall. Lester gave up eight hits, two earned runs and struck out nine in 7 1/3 innings. Lester threw 109 pitches and 76 were for strikes.
Bard, a right hander, faced Wigginton, who fouled out along the third base line, and Mora, who was thrown out after Pedroia charged a slow roller to toss him out at first.

PITCHING CHANGE (9:13, END 7, 5-2 RED SOX)
The Orioles welcomed lefty Mark Hendrickson into the game with runners on first and second and two outs to face Ortiz.
Hendrickson caught Ortiz looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning with runners on first and second. Drew reached on a single to right and Bay walked to set up the change that forced Guthrie out of the game.
Guthrie allowed eight hits, five earned runs, walked three and struck out two in 6 2/3 innings. He threw 105 pitches, 61 for strikes.

CENTURY MARK (9:01 MID 7, 5-2 RED SOX)
Lester tossed his 100th pitch of the night to get Jones to hit a weak roller to short to end the inning with Roberts on second base.
Izturis was thrown out on his ground ball to second to start the inning. Roberts then smacked a double off the WALL. Markakis struck out prior to Jones stepping to the plate.

LAROCHE HITLESS (8:52, END 6, 5-2 RED SOX)
In his first start since being traded from Pittsburgh, LaRoche is 0-for-3, flying out to center in the sixth. Varitek grounded out and Green flied out to right to end the inning.

FLYING HIGH (8:46, MID 6, 5-2 RED SOX)
The Orioles put a few hard hit balls into play in the sixth, but only Wigginton’s landed for a hit. Reimold led off the inning with a fly ball to center. After Wigginton’s single, Mora and Wieters each flied out to right.

TWO LEFT (8:38, END 5, 5-2 RED SOX)
The two-out magic didn’t work in the fifth inning as Markakis chased down Lowell’s fly ball toward right center to end the inning with runners on first and second.
After Pedroia and Drew each flied out, Bay smacked a double off the Wall. The Orioles intentionally walked Ortiz, who hit a homer in the first, to get to Lowell.

ONE, TWO, THREE (8:31, MID 5, 5-2 RED SOX)
For the first time since the first inning, Lester faced just three batters. Markakis grounded out, Jones struck out and Huff was thrown out after he hit a grounder to second.

TWO OUT WONDERS (8:26, END 4, 5-2 RED SOX)
The Red Sox are finding ways to score with two outs. After LaRoche and Varitek each flied out, Nick Green dropped a bunt toward the left side of the infield, forcing Guthrie to come off the mound to field the ball. Green beat out Guthrie’s throw.
Ellsbury then drove in Green with a double to right. But Ellsbury was picked off at second to end the inning.

ORIOLES SCORE (8:18, MID 4, 4-2 RED SOX)
The Orioles took advantage of one of their best scoring chances of the night and all with two outs.
With one out, Reimold reached on a single to left. He advanced to second on Wigginton’s walk.
Mora struck out for the second out of the inning. Weiters then stepped in and hit a single to right field. Drew launched a throw to home plate but it was off the mark, allowing Reimold to score, Wigginton to end up on third and Weiters to take second.
Izturis then hit a slow roller toward third base. Lowell tried to make the bare-handed grab but fumbled it allowing Wigginton to score and Izturis to reach first safely. The play was ruled a hit.
Roberts then lined out to short to end the inning.

QUIET BATS(8:09, END 3, 4-0 RED SOX)
Drew and Bay were retired on infield grounders to short and third base, respectively. Ortiz reached base after being hit y a pitch. Markakis then made a shoe-string catch in right field on Lowell’s sinking fly ball to end the inning.

NOTHING DOING (8:03, MID 3, 4-0 RED SOX)
Roberts hit a double that skipped down the left field line with one out, but Lester was able to strike out Markakis and Jones back-to-back and end the inning.

HEATING UP (7:59, END 2, 4-0 RED SOX)
The bats are warming up for the Red Sox. Ellsbury hit a double to deep center field to drive in Jason Varitek with two outs.

Adam LaRoche, who started tonight, began the inning with a slow dribbler to third for the first out. LaRoche is in the lineup in place of Kevin Youkilis, who was given the night off. Youkilis is expected to start at third tomorrow.
Following LaRoche, Varitek hit a liner to right field that bounced into the stands, giving him a double. Nick Green struck out for the second out of the inning, but was followed by Ellsbury’s double.
Guthrie was able to get out of the inning after Pedroia was thrown out on a ground ball to short.

CAUGHT LOOKING (7:42, MID 2, 3-0 RED SOX)
Lester froze Matt Wieters with a fastball with two strikes to end the inning with runners on first and second.
Aubrey Huff struck out to begin the inning. Nolan Reimold followed with a walk. Ty Wigginton’s chopper was well played by Dustin Pedroia to get the out at second but was too slow to get Wigginton at first. Melvin Mora then beat out a slow grounder to third to give the Orioles runners at first and second, who were eventually left stranded.

ORTIZ GOES DEEP (7:26, END 1, 3-0 RED SOX)
With runners on first and third and two outs, David Ortiz cranked his 13th homer of the season driving in Dustin Pedroia, who reached on a walk, and Jason Bay, who singled to left center field.
The homer gave the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie was able to get Mike Lowell to fly out to shallow right field to end the inning.

Nice start for Jon Lester as he retired the first three batters. Brian Roberts struck out swinging, Nick Markakis grounded out and Adam Jones struck out swinging to end the inning.
