Paul Byrd reported to Fort Myers, Fla., today to begin throwing and start his path to joining the Red Sox. Byrd, who pitched for the Sox down the stretch last season, and the team came to an agreement with Wednesday night on a minor league contract.
Byrd is “probably about three weeks away from being able to help,” general manager Theo Epstein said. Byrd, according to Epstein, had been throwing and working out consistently through June and the start of July. When he had not heard from any teams two weeks ago, Byrd stopped throwing. Once the Sox called, he restarted his regimen and even pitched two innings against a college team.
“He’s got some work to do to get in game condition and to get his arm into shape,” Epstein said.
