Francona: Varitek behind plate tonight

Jason Varitek will start at catcher tonight for the Red Sox with Josh Beckett on the mound, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said during his weekly conversation with the hosts of WEEI’s “The Dale and Holley Show.”

Victor Martinez, who caught Jon Lester in the Red Sox’ 8-4 victory last night, will start at first base, with Kevin Youkilis sliding over to third and Mike Lowell sitting out against Tampa Bay righthander Matt Garza.

Francona also said that Tim Wakefield, who required a cortisone shot in his back recently and has made just one start since the All-Star break, is “minimally better,” but said the status of the 43-year-old knuckleballer remains up in the air for the foreseeable future.
