Tim Wakefield, who has been hampered by the effects of a back injury since mid-July, threw 40 pitches today during a side session and said afterward that everything went fine.
When asked if he would be able to make his scheduled start Monday against the Royals, Wakefield replied, “In my mind, yes.”
The 43-year-old has a fragmented disk in his back and has already had three cortisone shots to help him cope with the pain.
Wakefield has not pitched since Sept. 5 against Chicago and has made just two starts since the All-Star break.
The knuckleballer is 11-4 this season with a 4.22 ERA in 19 starts.
