Jon Lester, the annointed No. 1 starter in the playoffs, collapsed in pain on the mound and left the game in the third inning after Melky Cabrera drilled a line drive off the inside of his right knee. Lester hopped on his left leg, unable to put weight on his right, before he crumpled to the ground.
Manager Terry Francona and team medical staff hovered over Lester as he stayed down, and then he limped off the field. Along with trainers Mike Reinold and Paul Lessard, David Ortiz helped Lester hobble down the dugout steps and into the tunnel.
More on this as soon as we get word. Needless to say, this is a bad, bad scene for the Red Sox. Shades of Josh Beckett’s oblique last year.
