Minutes before the major league club took the field tonight, the Red Sox handed out the organization’s Minor League Awards for 2009. Six players were honored:
Casey Kelly, pitcher of the year: For Single A teams in Greenville and Salem, the 19-year-old went 7-5 with a 2.08 ERA.
Ryan Kalish, offensive player of the year: Hit .279 with 18 home runs and 77 RBI in 135 games between Single A Salem and Double A Portland.
Ryan Dent, defensive player of the year: The 20-year-old split the season between Salem and Portland, and handled 512 chances at either second base (65 games) or shortstop (47).
Derrik Gibson, baserunner of the year: Playing for the short-A team in Lowell, Gibson stole 28 bases, and also hit .290.
Juan Rodriguez, Latin program pitcher of the year: For the club’s rookie-league team, went 3-1 with a 1.55 ERA, striking out 78 in 63 2/3 innings.
Keury de la Cruz, Latin program player of the year: Hit .259 with three home runs and 50 RBI for the rookie-league team.
