Sox add Cabrera

The Red Sox have added another arm to their bullpen for the final week of the season, selecting righthanded reliever Fernando Cabrera to the active roster from Triple A Pawtucket.

Cabrera, 27, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on August 21 and outrighted to Pawtucket on August 27. He has pitched four games for the Red Sox this season, allowing two earned runs in four innings while striking out seven.

Cabrera, who has spent parts of six seasons in the majors while previously pitching for Cleveland and Baltimore, had 22 saves and a 1.71 ERA for the PawSox this season in 43 games.

The Sox also recalled first baseman Aaron Bates from Pawtucket and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain. The active major league roster is now at 37 players and the club’s 40-man roster is at its maximum of 40
